In recent years, floating stages have transformed waterfront spaces. These innovative additions to public waterfronts bring the arts to people by combining aquatics recreation and entertainment, introducing a new dimension to community engagement.

The floating stage itself spans 3,600 square feet and is capable of supporting more than 70,000 pounds. Its air-filled pods underneath ensure stability even in the face of gentle waves. Performers highlight the thrill of performing on an exclusive platform.

Community Bonds

The venue fosters engagement by involving local artists, musicians and performers in the planning and execution of their programs. This collaborative approach not only provides a platform for local talent, but also strengthens community bonds.

Economic Value

Floating stages make a significant impact on the public spaces, tourism, boating industry, and local and regional economies where they are located. Installing this unique venue not only generates interest in watercraft, in turn boosting sales, but also stimulates growth across various sectors of the economy. An independent study by the Americans for the Arts revealed that a 12-week program initiated by Floating Stage Productions generated more than $14 million for the local and regional community.

Revitalizing Unused Space

Floating stages can revitalize underutilized spaces, transforming ordinary parks, marinas and community areas into vibrant theaters on water. By breathing new life into these spaces, park and recreation agencies can enhance social interaction and unity, offering residents and visitors alike a unique platform to share experiences and build lasting memories.

Inclusivity and Cultural Diversity

By showcasing a wide range of performances, from traditional dances to contemporary theater, the floating stage can help foster inclusivity and cross-cultural understanding. This adds richness to the social and cultural fabric of the communities where the stage is located.

A Unique Experience

The introduction of a floating stage at the historic Lake Compounce amusement park in Bristol, Connecticut, in 2023, led to increased attendance, diversification of entertainment offerings, strengthened community ties through local talent involvement, boosted regional tourism, and enhanced park visibility in the industry. This positioned Lake Compounce as a unique and appealing destination, drawing visitors from both the local community and neighboring regions, contributing to the park’s overall success during the 2023 season. “We are looking forward to building on the success of our Summer Concert Series in 2024 as we continue to utilize our floating lake stage to offer our guests an extremely unique way to enjoy entertainment at our park,” says Doug Hemphill, Lake Compounce general manager.

This case study exemplifies the profound impact of floating stages. By fostering community engagement, refurbishing underutilized spaces, promoting cultural diversity and creating unforgettable experiences, the venue can become an essential contributor to the social, cultural and economic vitality of the regions it serves.
